A lot has changed in 24 hours, one of which being Mercito Gesta and Joseph Diaz Jr., being elevated to the main event after Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez missed weight so badly, his fight against Gabriel Rosado was canceled, as the two topped the bill of the card on DAZN, this Saturday, March 18th, at the Walter Pyramid, in Long Beach, California. In he end, it was Gesta who walked away with a split-decision victory with two judges scoring it for him, 98-92, and 99-91, whereas one egregious scorecard turned in and scored the fight 97-93 for Diaz Jr.
Diaz Jr., who has had distractions outside of the ring, came in three pounds overweight for this bout as Diaz Jr came in the heaviest of his career at 139.4, and just looked unable to match the pace set by Gesta, who was busier in many of the rounds. The scheduled ten-round bout saw a back-and-forth bout that always felt as though Gesta was landing the bigger, more eye-catching shots, that judges seemingly took note of.
For Gesta, this is now two massive wins in consecutive fights as prior to defeating Joseph Diaz Jr, Gesta defeated another Diaz Jr, that of which being Joel Diaz Jr. For Joseph Diaz Jr., a 2012 U.S. Olympian this marks his third straight career loss, as his trouble both in-and-out of the ring.
